The 13th London (Kensingtons) battalion had arrived in France in 1914 to join 25 Brigade of 8th Division. They had been involved in the heavy fighting during the first half of 1915 but in August of that year had been withdrawn to the St Omer area as Line of Communications troops. For reasons as yet not known, Alfred Bolding was returning to England aboard the Hospital Ship Anglia when, on 17th November, 1915 she hit a mine laid by the German submarine UC-5 when just off the coast near Folkestone. Within 15 minutes the ship sank and he was one of the 164 people that lost their lives.
